Saida Fagala

I was born in Baku, Azerbaijan (former USSR) in a family of artists.

Graduated from the Baku State Art College 1974-77 with Bachelor of Arts degree.

Graduated from Baku State University of the Fine Arts and Culture 1978-1983 –MFA ceramics

I spent 1 year in St. Petersburg studying academic drawing and painting. In 1983 started working at the Ceramic Shop at the Union of Artist’s Manufactory as a leading artist and mass production designer.

Was accepted to the Union of the Soviet Artists in 1990, and started actively participating in art
exhibitions and shows, in Baku, Moscow and Eastern Europe. I had about 5 solo exhibitions in Baku, and collaborated with a few souvenir shops.

In 1998 I moved to the United States, in 2000 moved to Houston TX and became a member of the Texas Clay artists until present.

I participated in various exhibitions and was collaborating with commercial galleries like: Anya Tish Gallery, Asher Gallery (HCCC) Foelber Pottery Gallery, Winter Street studios- gallery 3, The East End gallery, Talento Bilingue, Beth Gallery, and Hanson Gallery.

In 2012 my drawing “Reaching for the stars” was accepted at the “Open The Door” competition.

My door was later purchased by the Lone Star College.
My ceramic sculptures were exhibited around the world: Istanbul-Turkey, Hamburg- Germany Moscow-,
Russia, Dubai- Emirates, also in NY- United Nations pavilion, Washington DC-Chamber of Commerce of Azerbaijan, Sag Harbor Washington state.-private gallery, Irvin-TX, Austin, TX.

I showcased my ceramics at the Houston Crafts show in 2004 and Texas Crafts Show in 2008; in 2010 my composition Three Women was awarded the Best in Show at Hanson Gallery (Uptown Park).

I recently teach visual arts at The Post Oak School, and make custom made and one of a kind ceramics.

My artworks were inspired by nature and people.
I sculpt with porcelain and decorate with cobalt blue, slightly emphasizing the features or the body lines. My sculptures are unique and never the same, I love the translucency of the porcelain, its plasticity and the beauty of white color.

But I am also attracted to terra-cotta clay that has this rich red-brown perfect background for colors and texture. The movement of clay sometimes moves my hand and mind and some improvisation occurs
conflicting with my ideas, but it’s always magical moment when simple piece of clay transforms into art.
