“Fairy Tales in Lacquer” Exhibition

Russian Cultural Center – Our Texas is proud to present “Fairy Tales in Lacquer,” an exhibition of vintage Russian lacquer boxes.
The traditional origins of lacquer boxes, and the reason for their prevalence in Russian culture, lies in one of Peter the Great’s decrees in 1721, where he asked for ninety-four lacquer tiles to adorn the Monplaisir Palace in St. Petersburg.
Russian lacquer boxes feature intricately hand-drawn miniature paintings based on a variety of themes, including fairy tales, poems, country life, troikas, landscapes, battle scenes, and old art masterpieces. They get their name from the many layers of lacquer (most often, black and red) that are applied to both their outside and inside sections. Coats of clear lacquer, or varnish, are the last layers to be put on and provide a stunning shine to the box.
Our unique collection contains boxes from the twentieth-century masters of their respective schools: Surkova and the widely respected Serov of Palekh, V.Kozlov of Mstera, Demtsov of Kholui
